The Rhone Alps
The Rhone Alps (or French Alps) region is situated in eastern France and is borded by Switzerland and Italy. With the Rhone river springing from a glacier and winding its way southwards through it towards the Med, the whole region is characterised by meadows and mountains. Nestled in the valleys and among the peaks are some 50 holiday areas collectively offering up a mix of quaint villages and purpose built resorts. As a base for all-year-round outdoor activities in a mix of traditional alpine chalets or state of the art apartments, the variety here is simply endless.
The Rhone Alps region is easily accessible from a host of airports including Grenoble, Geneva, Annecy, Lyon and St Etienne. Calais is a seven hour drive-time to Lyon, the region’s capital. Key resorts particularly popular with British and French holiday makers and with their own character, atmosphere and local food specialities include Courchevel, Les Arcs, Chamonix, Tignes, Chatel, Morzine, Meribel, Le Plagne, Val Thorens, Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alps. But there are many more to be found such as the quieter, lesser known resorts of Megeve and Thollon Les Memise.
